Know why you are quitting smoking

 
Anyone who has ever attempted to Quit Smoking before knows how difficult it can be at times. The sad fact is that so many get so close to giving up and let themselves down at a crucial turning point during withdrawals. It is when the craving is the strongest, and when you cannot seem to think about anything but a cigarette, that you need to not have one the most. If you can overcome and get through the hardest time, you will start to feel stronger and no longer a victim to the withdrawals.

The problem is that when you are in the peak of withdrawing, you feel so rotten you forget all the reasons why you are quitting. All the thoughts and retaliations you had previously worked to build up in your mind have seemingly disappeared when you need them the most. All you can seem to think about are the reasons why you should smoke again and how good it would be. You can become narrow minded and obsessed, then if you give in, the guilt sets in, and the feeling of being hopeless.

If your creative, you can put time and effort into making it all colourful and pretty, or if not, just put pen to paper and write as many reasons as you can think of as to why you want to give up smoking. Add to it over a few nights, especially in the quiet moments when you are alone and often berating yourself for smoking.

Then when you are ready to quit, you are armed for the battle. You will go through your times of feeling fine, and when you start to feel depressed and stuck on the thoughts of a smoke, go to the list. Read it again and again until you feel all that you felt when you were writing it. If you feel anger, direct it towards the cigarettes for sucking you in and making you weak. Refuse to give in to them, and remember they have poisoned you for long enough, and have poisoned your mind into believing you need to have them.

You need to be constantly reminded of the benefits for you becoming a non smoker. Keep the list in plain sight for you and everyone else to see. Making it known you are quitting is also good because you wont want to embarrass yourself by being seen as giving up. Whatever it takes to get you through, you should do.

Some things you may like to include on your list are; I would like to reduce my risk of getting cancer, heart disease, emphysema; I would like to look and feel younger; I don’t want to be controlled by my need for cigarettes; I want to be a good role model; I don’t want to feel embarrassed any longer; I want to have more energy; I want to be more socially accepted; I want to be able to smell nice and not like smoke any more; I want to give my lungs a chance to recover and detoxify themselves; then add whatever reasons you can think of on your own. You may want to put a heading that says “I release the need for smoking cigarettes because:”
