It is a well-known fact that tobacco, whether in the form of cigarettes or in a chewable form, is the biggest risk factor for cancer of the oral cavity, which can involve any part of the oral cavity like the tongue, the lips, gums, salivary glands, or the soft palate (throat). This risk is increased 15 times in combination with alcohol.
In the US, 30,000 new cases of oral cancer are diagnosed each year. The situation worldwide is far more grim. Cancer of the oral cavity can make every moment of your life a living hell, literally wipe the smile off your face, and make your face look like something the cat brought in. If you start looking unpleasant because of oral cancer, then you may even be shunned by your society.
Oral cancer can disfigure your physical appearance beyond recognition, adding to the already discoloured and stained teeth, bad breath, and gum diseases caused by smoking. To top this, tobacco is a vasoconstrictor (i.e., it constricts the blood vessels) and weakens the immune system, slowing down the rate at which the wounds in your mouth heal. A heavy smoker for most of his life, he couldn’t carry on for very long what he loved to do the most –singing – because he lost his voice as well as his life to oral cancer of the throat at a young age of 58. |

But the good news is that all this misery is so very easily preventable, within your own control, simply by deciding to quit smoking. And if you do that, then not only will you lead a cheerful life, you would also save money that you waste on buying cigarettes as well as on the enormous costs involved in the treatment of oral cancer.
So, the moral of the story is: If you want to live a happy and bright life, a life without the gruelling experience of suffering from oral cancer – quit smoking.
